Set Aside Prayer

Alcoholics Anonymous, page 58 states, “Some of us have tried to hold on to our old ideas and the result was nil until we let go absolutely.” Even if my old ideas were learned in recovery being open-minded is still a key to my spiritual growth. I must accept that my knowledge and experience is inherently limited. I enlarge my spiritual life only when I am receptive to new experiences. Some spiritual traditions refer to this as Shoshin, or Beginner’s Mind, an attitude of openness and a relaxation of preconceived ideas; a sort of child-like wonder. I often say the following prayer with my sponsee at the beginning of each session:

God, help me set aside everything I think I know
About myself, my addiction, these steps and especially You
So that I may have an open mind and a new experience with the Truth
About myself, my addiction, these steps and especially You.
